Hey Twin Cities friends — happy April.

Quick little proud moment: I’ve had so many people come up to me in the last couple of weeks and tell me they love this newsletter… and honestly? Same. I’m ridiculously proud of it.

Twin Cities Collective has quickly become one of the largest local roundups for business networking events — and that’s the lane I’ve officially decided to niche down into. We still love a fun social moment, but these days I’m focusing on the workshops, meetups, and “go meet someone who might change your whole year” kind of rooms.

Hey Twin Cities friends — happy second-half-of-March. If you’ve been craving a reason to get out of your home office, meet a few smart humans, and leave with fresh ideas (or at least a new coffee spot), this one’s for you.

Also: shoutout to anyone else who spent the weekend doing the great Minnesota tradition of defrosting your car and trying to keep your hope alive. I’m really hoping the weather chills out (in the good way) later this week so we can actually get out and do things.

Quick heads up before we jump in: I’m going to be speaking this week as part of the Plymouth Small Business Networking Group (link below) this Thursday morning, and it’s a super easy way to plug into the local small biz community.

It’s a Q&A-style marketing panel with the City of Plymouth, MN, and I’ll be on the panel with two other folks, focusing specifically on marketing for your small business.

A Message from the Heart of Our Community

Hey friends,

I want to talk about how proud I am of the Twin Cities for stepping up during these incredibly difficult weeks. The last couple weeks have been some of the hardest in my life and in the life of many people in our community. As somebody who runs a local networking newsletter, it’s been hard for me to know what to do. But we continue on!

What I’ve found is that providing resources is what I do best. And right now, that feels more important than ever.

I’ve been able to attend a couple of networking events this month, and honestly, they felt so much more meaningful than anything I’ve done in a while. We were able to talk openly. Everyone was being honest about how they were feeling. It felt deeper and more real than conversations have felt in a long time. Community is SOO important right now.

I went to a book launch event for a friend, and he shared the story of how the Mayo Clinic was founded during a time of crisis - and something incredibly good came out of it. I believe that even though we’re in tough times right now, there is hope. There are so many people in the Twin Cities who are working for the best outcomes, who are showing up, who are caring for each other.

I’m an optimist at heart, and I want to honor that.

Supporting Our Community Right Now

I want to shout out all of the people who are doing so many things - honestly, I can't even keep track. The community bike rides honoring Alex Pretti. The singing resistance gatherings. The mutual aid networks forming in neighborhoods across the cities. The small businesses opening their doors as safe spaces. There are so many ways people are showing up for each other right now, and it's honestly overwhelming in the best way. But I wanted to share some of the resources from people who are curating resources (yes, I'm like a curator of curators). I know how many people read this newsletter, and while it's always been focused on business and networking events, right now the most important thing we can do is support each other.

Here’s how we can help:

💰 Put your money toward small businesses in town. Going out and supporting our local community is one concrete action we can all take right now.

🤝 Show up to community events. Whether it’s networking, resistance organizing, or just being together - presence matters.

📢 Share resources. If you know of people doing good work or organizing mutual aid, pass it along.

Hi friends,

Let me be honest with you: there are more important things in the world right now than networking events.

This has been an incredibly difficult month in Minnesota. I want to say this clearly: please don’t risk your safety to attend networking events. Your wellbeing comes first, always.

If you’re not feeling ready to go out, that’s completely understandable. Stay warm, stay safe, and take care of yourself.

Normally, I’d fill this newsletter with a list of upcoming networking events and opportunities. But honestly, right now that doesn’t feel as important. What feels important is saying this: you’re not alone, this community cares about you, and we’re here for each other.

And yet. This is also a business community. My main purpose for running Twin Cities Collective is to support local businesses and the people who run them. For many of you, networking isn’t just about collecting business cards or attending mixers — it’s lifeblood. It’s how you find clients, build partnerships, discover opportunities, and create the connections that keep your business going. Especially during times like these.

So while I would never ask anyone to put themselves at risk, I also want to honor the reality that many of you need these connections to survive and thrive. Some of you may be ready to show up. Some of you may need to stay home. Both are valid. Both are okay.

What Twin Cities Collective Stands For

Maybe they were drawn by the lakes, the arts scene, the neighborhoods with character, or the reputation of Minnesota Nice.

I stay here because this place has become home. Not just the physical place, but the people. The connections. The sense that when things get hard, we show up for each other. That’s not something you can find everywhere, and it’s not something to take for granted.

Right now, in the middle of an incredibly difficult time, that sense of community is being tested. But it’s also when it matters most.

We’ve been through tough things before. We will face tough things again. But we’ve also shown, time and time again, that we’re stronger together. We will get through this.

Supporting Our Small Business Community

As a business owner whose clients are primarily local, I want to speak directly to what we’re all feeling right now: this is tough. When our community hurts, we all hurt. When people are staying home for safety, our coffee shops feel quieter, our boutiques see fewer visitors, our service providers have gaps in their calendars.

The people behind these businesses — the ones who took a leap of faith to open their doors, who know your regular order, who remember your name — they’re navigating the same uncertainty we all are, with the added weight of keeping their businesses alive. They moved here or stayed here for the same reasons we all did. They believed in this community. They invested in it.

❄️ End-of-Year Twin Cities Entrepreneur Roundup (Dec 15 Edition)

Hey friends,

We’re officially in the end-of-year stretch.

That funny in-between time where there are fewer official networking events, but a lot more holiday parties, friend get-togethers, and cozy things to do around the Cities.

💌 A Little Personal Note
Celebrating 7 Years of Best of Awards and what’s next!

Before I sign off, I also want to say a heartfelt thank you for seven years of showing up for the Twin Cities Collective Best of Awards. Since 2018, you’ve voted, shared, nominated friends, and helped celebrate so many local people and businesses — even during COVID when everything felt upside down.

This is actually my first December since 2018 without the Best of Awards, and it’s bittersweet. Part of that is practical: it was a lot of work behind the scenes, and I didn’t really make money from it (which made it hard to really be motivated to continue). I eventually realized I don’t actually love hosting events, and by last year we didn’t even do an in‑person party. The last big celebration was back in 2023.

On top of that, the social media landscape has really changed. The local online community used to feel smaller and more connected — everyone sort of knew the same bloggers and creators. Over time, as platforms grew and niches fractured, it got harder to find and rally “the local internet” in the same way. What started as a fun, creative blogger awards slowly shifted into more of a general small business competition, and fewer people recognized local bloggers and creators at all.

By last year, I was really wrestling with whether it still felt right to continue. It started to feel more like a popularity contest, and I even had people upset with me about results (even though it was fan voted-I had no effect on who won!). I want to keep the tone here positive, but the short version is: the spirit of the awards just wasn’t the same as it was before COVID, and it felt like the right time to lovingly retire them.

The good news is that letting go has made space for things I’m genuinely excited about with TCC:

  • 🎥 Doing video recaps of local events on the TCC Instagram, TikTok and Linkedin

  • 📨 Focusing on this Substack, which I’ve been writing since early spring — and loving the twice‑a‑month rhythm. It’s sustainable for me and still keeps you in the loop on what’s happening with Twin Cities Collective.

Behind the scenes, I’ve also shifted my business more fully into Red Thread Studios helping local businesses with social media video content and my site, JennaRedfield.com. I’ve been teaching Notion, building systems, and leaning into the work that lights me up day‑to‑day.

I also publish posts every Tuesday on my OTHER Substack The Optimization Toolbox

If you’ve never heard of it, Twin Cities Startup Week is a five-day festival of entrepreneurship, innovation, and community. It’s run by BETA, a local nonprofit that supports early-stage startups here in Minnesota. This year, they’ve teamed up with Communiful, a creative hub and coworking community, to really level up the experience. They’re the driving forces behind this year’s event, and you can tell — the energy is high, and the promotion has been everywhere.

I’ve been attending TCSW for eight years now (hard to believe!), and this is my fourth year speaking. Every year I leave with new connections, new ideas, and a renewed sense of why I love being part of the entrepreneurial community here.

And here’s the thing: you don’t have to be a startup founder to get something out of it. Startup Week is an incredible way to network with other local businesses, meet creative people, and learn about entrepreneurship even if you’re just curious. With so many new folks expected this year, it’s going to be an amazing chance to connect.

I’m so excited to share that I’ve been selected as a speaker at this year’s Startup Week — and only about 7% of applicants were chosen based on fan votes. 🎉

My session is on Tuesday, Oct 7 at 1:00 p.m. at LaSalle Plaza.

I’ve been seeing this idea of “The Great Lock In” floating around TikTok, and it really stuck with me. Basically, it’s this: you’ve got four months left of the year. September 1st is the perfect time to shift gears—summer’s behind us, routines are back, and now it’s about locking in on those goals you really want to hit before the year ends. September is even better than New Year’s for building habits.

For entrepreneurs and small business owners, this is such a powerful season. People are less busy, they’re back in town, and networking events are in full swing. It’s the perfect chance to reset, refocus, and reconnect.

Here are a few ways to make your Great Lock In actually stick this fall:

✨ Pick your pace of networking. Maybe that’s one event a week, or just two this month—but choose something that nudges you a little outside your comfort zone.

This month marks nine years since I first started Twin Cities Collective back in 2016 on Instagram and Facebook. Honestly, it still blows my mind. When I started, it wasn’t because I had some grand plan — I just noticed something missing.

There were so many amazing people doing incredible things in the Twin Cities… but they were all in separate silos. I’d go to networking events, but none of them felt like me. So I decided to try something different and host my own.

✨Transitioning to this Newsletter

Over time, I realized something: I’m not really an event host. My true skill is connecting people. I love helping someone discover a new group, business, or event they’d never heard of before. I was burned out on hosting and TCC was in limbo.

But then people kept asking me, “What are you going to next?” At first, I’d send individual DMs or emails. But eventually I thought — why not just share everything I’m finding in one place? And that’s how this newsletter really became my thing and continuing the brand I spent so many years building.

The coolest part? Just last month, I went to a couple of events I’d featured here, and people came up to tell me they found them through this email newsletter.

That made my whole week. People taking action after reading this newsletter.

Here’s the thing: reading about events is great, but going to them is where the magic happens.

I try to include a mix — free, paid, big, small — but no matter what you choose, the first step is actually showing up. Networking is a long game. The more you’re out there, the more people see you, the more opportunities come your way.

And this isn’t just for entrepreneurs. Whether you’re a freelancer, work a 9–5, are in between jobs, or home with kids — meeting people who inspire you (or teach you something new) is one of the best investments you can make in yourself.

🎡 Spotlight: The Great Minnesota Get-Together

If you’re new to the Twin Cities, let me be the first to tell you: the Minnesota State Fair isn’t just an event—it’s basically a season. From August 22nd through September 2nd, over 2 million people will make their way to the fairgrounds in Falcon Heights, making it one of the largest state fairs in the country.

What to expect? A little bit of everything:

  • Food on a stick — from deep-fried pickles to (yes) spaghetti and meatballs.

  • Free entertainment — music stages, marching bands, roaming performers.

  • Big-name concerts — the Grandstand lineup is worth checking if you love live shows.

  • Animal barns — adorable farm animals, horse shows, and even llama costume contests.

  • Local makers & vendors — shop Minnesota-made goods and art.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • Wear comfy shoes—you’ll easily hit 10,000+ steps without realizing it.

  • Go early in the morning for smaller crowds.

  • The Skyride and SkyGlider are perfect for taking a break and getting a bird’s-eye view.

  • If you’re going with a group, set a meeting spot (cell service can be spotty).

If you’re new to town, the fair is also an amazing way to meet people and soak in Minnesota culture—whether you’re a die-hard foodie, music fan, or people-watcher.
